奥林巴斯(Olympus)作为相机产业中一家颇负盛名的厂商，几十年来设计生产过无数优秀的摄影器材。无论是手动时代红极一时的OM系列，还是数码时代自成一脉的E系列，奥林巴斯都将他们打造成了精确、牢固、可靠的精品。以致现今摄影界内奥林巴斯的簇拥者遍及世界各地，数量颇为庞大。

1936年，奥林巴斯(Olympus)生产了第一台照相机，是画面为6×4.5厘米的120折迭式相机。1937年，公司生产了采用127胶卷的焦平面快门照相机Standard，该机具有测距联动，自动卷片，防重拍，可换镜头等功能，被认为是当时的超级照相机。40－50年代，公司主要生产120折迭式和双镜头反光相机。1948年，公司开始生产35毫米镜头快门相机。

奥林巴斯光学工业公司的前身是高千穗制作所，创立于1919年，生产显微镜和体温计。1949年公司更名为奥林巴斯光学工业公司。 1960年，奥林巴斯推出了日本第一台快门速度优先的35毫米镜头快门自动曝光相机--Olynpus Auto Eye。60－70年代，公司还推出了多种35毫米半幅小型相机，这种相机因体积小、重量轻、拍摄张数最多（为35毫米全幅相机的一倍）而深受好评,并一直畅销不疲。

Olympus established a tradition of quality manufacturing with the development of its microscope. Olympus continued this tradition through the development of camera lenses, starting in 1934. Two years later the Zuiko lens was born. Zuiko lenses were used in the Semi-Olympus and the Olympus-Six, as well as in the Olympus Reflex 2-lens reflex camera. With these cameras, Olympus laid the foundations of its future role as a camera manufacturer.
